Petition Calls On Woodstock To Install Crosswalk On Arnold Mill Road

The petition began circulating days after a Hurricane Irma evacuee and her baby were hit and killed by a vehicle while crossing the road.

WOODSTOCK, GA -- More than 600 signatures have been signed to a petition calling on the city of Woodstock to install crosswalks along Arnold Mill Road, the street where a Hurricane Irma evacuee and her 3-month-old baby were hit and killed by a teenager last weekend.

The petition, created by Scott Bagwill, has received 681 out of the 1,000 it's seeking, states "there needs to be ample crosswalks and better lighting added near the Northside Amphitheater to help people get across safely."

The petition is referring to the deaths of Kaitlin Hunt and her 3-month-old daughter Riley, who died days apart following the Sept. 9 collision (SIGN UP: Get Patch's Daily Newsletter and Real Time News Alerts. Or, if you have an iPhone, download the free Patch app).

Hunt, of Port St. Lucie, Florida, was carrying Riley in her arms around 8:16 p.m. Saturday when they and a family friend were struck by a Jeep Patriot driven by 17-year-old Zoe Reardon of Atlanta, who was traveling westbound towards Main Street. Riley passed away Saturday evening, and Kaitlin Hunt and the friend, Kathy Deming of Marietta, were both transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital. Kaitlin Hunt died Tuesday and Deming, who remains hospitalized, is "slowly recovering" from her injuries, sheriff's office spokesperson Sgt. Marianne Kelley previously told Patch. Sgt. Kelley said the accident remains under investigation.

A GoFundMe account has been created to help Hunt's family pay for any expenses arising from the double fatality. You can click here to donate to the fundraiser.

The scene of the collision -- Arnold Mill Road near Hubbard Road -- is near the site of the Northside Hospital-Cherokee Amphitheater, which was hosting the final show of the city's 2017 Summer Concert Series.

Installing a crosswalk on Arnold Mill Road near the venue isn't as easy as one may think, the city of Woodstock notes. It's a pedestrian enhancement that has been reviewed in the past, said city spokesperson Brittany Duncan.

"However, the challenge is the line of sight for eastbound traffic coming over the hill," she said. "We continue working through it with our city engineers." The current grade of the road, City Manager Jeff Moon added, would make it difficult for eastbound-traveling motorists to stop in time to allow motorists to safely cross the street.
