Please don't say “HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY”

PLEASE, DO NOT SAY “HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY”

It’s sad, but we hear it said every year: “Happy Memorial Day.” And that’s wrong to say.

For many families who have lost loved ones, it’s not a happy day, and it’s not a day intended to be celebrated in the traditional sense of that word.

If you’re thinking to yourself “I have said this, but it wasn’t my intent to be disrespectful”. Then we encourage you to please take a moment to learn why the holiday exists and how you might recognize it.

For some, the meaning of Memorial Day is deeply personal. It is a day to mourn a dear grandparent, parent, spouse, child, sibling, or friend who died in service to our nation. We ask you to remember the true meaning of Memorial Day and seek ways to honor our nation’s heroes who died in service to our great nation.

Together, we can reignite the true purpose of Memorial Day - never allowing ourselves and others to forget the ultimate sacrifice made by our fallen heroes and their families.

If you are struggling with the proper thing to say as Memorial Day approaches, here are a few alternatives:

1. I wish you a meaningful Memorial Day.
2. I hope you enjoy your weekend but please pause to remember our fallen military members and their families, and the high price they paid for our freedom.

Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a Day of Remembrance, a Day of Mourning, a Day of Honor, and a Day of Love. It is a day when we reflect on the Significance of Service and the Gravity of Sacrifice.

Our flag does not fly because of the wind that moves it. It flies with the last breath of each person who died protecting it.

We will always Honor and Remember them all.
