Police Seek Vehicle Involved In Debit Card Skimming

The Cherokee Sheriff's Office said the silver minivan is linked to cases of identity fraud reported to its agency and the city of Canton.

CANTON, GA — The Cherokee Sheriff's Office is asking the public to help them track down the vehicle believed to be involved in recent debit card skimming cases reported to its agency and the Canton Police Department.

The vehicle, a silver minivan that's possibly a Dodge Caravan, bears a Tennessee license plate that ends in the letters SMD, the agency said.

According to the sheriff's office's BOLO alert, it appears the vehicle and driver were captured on surveillance camera July 29 and July 30 using an ATM at a Regions Bank establishment on Camp Creek Parkway in East Point.

Cherokee Sheriff's Office spokesperson Jay Baker told Patch that agency's detectives have taken about 25 reports of fraud related to the skimming. Canton Police Chief Mark Mitchell said investigators are working about 23 cases after residents noticed money from their accounts had been withdrawn from various ATMs around metro Atlanta.

Following the spike in reports, Canton police shared several tips on how you can greatly reduce your chances of becoming a victim of financial card skimming:

  • Choose gas pumps closest to and within sight of cashiers.
  • Use ATMs in well-lit, secure locations.
  • Look at the card reader slot and surrounding areas for anything that looks out of place, mismatched, or loose.
  • Make sure no one is watching you enter your PIN or filming you on a cell phone.

  • Use your eyes: look before you insert your card.
  • Use your fingers: if something doesn't feel right move on.
  • Pay inside with cash or credit instead of at the pump.

The Cherokee Sheriff's Office asks anyone who sees the suspect vehicle to contact Detective Jeff Donley with the Criminal Investigations Division at 770-928-0239.
