WOODSTOCK, GA -- Five high school students in the Cherokee County School District have been chosen for a program to share their ideas on improving the metro Atlanta area.

The five students have been selected to participate in the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) program, the Model Atlanta Regional Commission (MARC), a six-month youth leadership program focused on regional issues and challenges.

The students are juniors Chabelli Canales, Malcolm Green and Sasha Stogniy of Woodstock High School; and River Ridge High School sophomores Grace Pfohl and Darla Willis.

According to its website, MARC is in its 19th year and brings together dozens of teens from the 10-county Atlanta region "for six months of study, debate and hands-on activities regarding regional issues and challenges."

The 10-county region includes Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry and Rockdale counties, as well as the city of Atlanta.

It gives teens an opportunity to learn more about the community in which they live while honing their leadership skills.

A student must be a rising sophomore or junior to apply for the program. A committee reviews the applications and selects members based on a variety of factors, including academic achievement, extracurricular activities, level of interest, a written essay and referrals.

You can learn more about MARC by visiting its website.
