Only one candidate qualified this week to run in the March 17 special election to fill the vacant Ward 6 seat on the Woodstock City Council.

Former Cherokee County School Board member Rob Usher is the only candidate in the race. Woodstock City Clerk Rhonda Pezzello said if no write-in candidates qualify during the designated period, which ends at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, the special election originally scheduled for March 17 will be cancelled.

Usher, who qualified on Wednesday, will be certified as the winner, and he would take office immediately after.

The Ward 6 council seat was vacated with the passing of Tessa Basford, who died in October 2014 after a long battle with cancer. Usher, who just completed his first and only term on the Cherokee County School Board, has lived in Woodstock for 18 years.
