Heavy Rains Cause Sewer Overflow In East Honolulu
A pump station error caused a manhole at 5311 Kalanianaole Highway to discharge an estimated 5,000 gallons of untreated wastewater.

HONOLULU – The Department of Environmental Services (ENV) responded last night to sanitary sewer overflow in East Honolulu.

The overflow was reported at 8:18 p.m. and stopped at 8:50 p.m. A pump station error caused a manhole at 5311 Kalanianaole Highway to discharge an estimated 5,000 gallons of untreated wastewater. ENV was able to recover 500 gallons with the remaining 4,500 entering a nearby stream.
The state Department of Health (DOH) was notified and has waived taking water samples. Warning signs will be posted today. ENV cleaned, disinfected, and deodorized the affected area.
