Algonquin Files Lawsuit To Demolish 119-Year-Old Downtown Building Due To Safety Concerns
Village officials are also seeking to require the property owners to cover demolition costs, according to media reports.
ALGONQUIN, IL — Algonquin officials have filed a civil lawsuit seeking court approval to demolish a 119-year-old downtown building they say has become structurally unsafe.
The village alleges the vacant building at 200 to 202 S. Main St. violates property maintenance codes and poses a safety hazard due to significant deterioration, including roof damage, water intrusion and mold. Court filings show an inspection found the structure to be unfit for occupancy and at risk of partial or total collapse, according to Shaw Local.
Village officials are also seeking to require the property owners to cover demolition costs, though the owners have not yet been located for service, Shaw Local is reporting.
