Algonquin Township Referendum Vote to Nix Road District Tabled
The local board is looking at placing a referendum on the November 2020 ballot that would abolish its highway district.

ALGONQUIN, IL — The Algonquin Township Board once again tabled a vote to place a resolution on the 2020 election ballot to abolish the township’s road district. A backer of the resolution, Algonquin Township Trustee Rachael Lawrence, was not present at this week’s meeting and let officials know she would not be able to attend ahead of the meeting since one of her kids was sick, according to the Northwest Herald. The board discussed the matter at its March meeting but voted to table the vote until April.
Lawrence has argued the highway district should be abolished since issues center around giving highway commissioners way too much power with little oversight, according to the Northwest Herald. But other trustees disagree and say the issues lie solely with Highway Commissioner Andrew Gasser.
The next Algonquin Township Board meeting is set for 7 p.m. on May 8 at the Algonquin Township building, 3702 U.S. Highway 14.
