Algonquin Township Consolidation Referendum Fails

The township board decided to stay quiet instead of voting on a motion to put a referendum on November's ballot.

ALGONQUIN, IL – Algonquin Township trustee attempted Wednesday night to get fellow trustees to vote on a resolution to approve a referendum, which would ask voters whether the township's highway department should be consolidated during November's election, but she didn't get far, the Northwest Herald reports. Trustee Rachael Lawrence motioned for board members to read aloud and adopt the resolution but her request was met with silence and the motion and the referendum was not voted on.

Officials in the township spoke during the meetingabout using House Bill 607, a new law that went into effect on Jan. 1, which could allow residents to abolish the highway department with a majority vote, according to the Northwest Herald. Road responsibilities would then be transferred to the township.

Local governments including Algonquin Township have until August 20 to approve binding referendums for the Nov. 6 midterm election.
