Friends of the Algonquin Library award $3,750 in undergraduate Scholarships
Since the first scholarship in 1995 they have awarded 47 individual scholarships totaling $28,500!

This year the Friends of the Library annual scholarship awards totaled $3,750 towards the higher education goals of five employees of the Algonquin Area Public Library. We congratulate this year's recipients, who are Emily Calvillo, Holly Eberle, Samantha Gidlund, Nathan Idstein and Leona Quist. Tuesday morning July 12, 2011 during the regular meeting of the Friends a special presentation was held by the Friends, officers and the scholarship committee.
Many years ago founding member, Bill Holden, suggested to the library director that we provide scholarships to deserving high school students, working as pages, and provide an incentive to continue their employment throught the summer before heading off to college. In the last several years we have added a graduate degree scholarship, revamped the application process to include an essay, opened eligibility to adult employees and increased the award amount for both scholarships. The undergraduate scholarship is for those working toward a bachelor's degree and the graduate scholarship is for those working toward a master's degree in library and information science. Since the first scholarship in 1995 they have awarded 47 individual scholarships totaling $28,500!
The library changes lives and is a necessary and integral part of the educational system. We appreciate the support of the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills community for their generous donations, attending our book sales, thereby making it possible for us to provide these additional funds for staff training, library equipment and programs for many years to come.
