Cardboard Boat Race Goes Pink for Cancer

The annual Cardboard Boat Regatta at the Algonquin Founders’ Day this year will look a little different. While contestants will still have approximately 150 square feet of cardboard and a Stanley knife, the duct tape used will be pink to support breast cancer awareness.

Although pink duct tape is much more expensive than the standard, Don Ericson from Ericson Marine said sponsor Steven Riggio thought it was worth it.

“He thought it would be a good idea to change the pace and make it pink,” Ericson said.

The rules of the regatta remain the same. Teams can only use supplies provided for them, and they have two hours to complete their boat.

“We don’t want anyone cheating,” Ericson said. “It really works out good, and the kids are really enthusiastic.”

Because of the high number of team entries, the race will be split into two age divisions. A race for those who are 13 and under will be first followed by an adult race.

The American Cancer Society will also have a booth set up at the event and will be collecting donations to support breast cancer.

The Cardboard Boat Regatta will be held Thursday, July 26 starting at 4 p.m. A cash prize, provided by Algonquin State Bank, will be given to the top three finishers in each age division.
