Crystal Lake Man Gets 7 Years In March 2019 Fatal Drug Overdose

A Crystal Lake man has been sentenced to 7 years in prison for delivering the heroin and fentanyl that killed a 32-year-old woman.

MCHENRY COUNTY, IL — One of three people charged in a March 2019 drug-induced homicide case has pleaded guilty to felony unlawful delivery of a controlled substance. Patrick Kenneally, McHenry County State's Attorney, announced Friday that 34-year-old Kane E. Kellett, from Crystal Lake, was sentenced to seven years in the Illinois Department of Corrections by McHenry County Judge Michael Coppedge for the felony offense, according to a news release from the state's attorney's office.

On March 5, Kellett delivered a bag containing heroin and fentanyl to a woman in Crystal
Lake, who later overdosed on the drugs that he delivered to her.

Last month, a 33-year-old Crystal Lake man accused of providing the heroin and fentanyl that lead to the overdose death of the 32-year-old woman, who suffered from cystic fibrosis, was sentenced to nine years in prison. Jeffrey J. Hauck was found guilty of drug-induced homicide during a bench trial in September, prosecutors said.

Melissa R. Ohlson, 41, of Woodstock, is also charged with drug-induced homicide in connection with the death, and was due back in court this past week.

According to police, the trio provided the drugs that lead the woman's death on March 6. At 3:26 a.m. that day, the Crystal Lake Police Department responded to a home in the o to 100 block of Talcott Avenue where they found the woman dead and also found items that lead them to believe illegal drugs use lead to her death, according to a news release.

Authorities determined heroin and fentanyl were delivered to the woman prior to her death and were the cause of her death, police said.
