LITH PD to Host Two Bike Safety Events in May

You and your kids can learn about bicycles, maneuverability, cone courses, bike safety, safety equipment, and rules of the road.

The Lake in the Hills Police Department will host two bike safety events in May.

The "Riding Right with the Lake in the Hills Police Department" events will be held at the Lake in the Hills Elementary School, 519 Willow St. in Lake in the Hills, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 20, at Sunset Park, 5200 Miller Road in Lake in the Hills.

The Lake in the Hills Police Tactical Bicycle Unit is inviting kids of all ages, parents, adults and motorists to its program. The Riding Right program is a hands-on educational program for the entire community to come together to learn about bicycles, maneuverability, cone courses, bike safety, safety equipment, and rules of the road, according to a news release.

All the events and services are free of charge. Pre-registration is not required.

The LITH Tactical Bike Unit will work with riders on their skill sets and bike knowledge. There will be cone courses set up for maneuverability work just like police officers train on. Officers will also be there to help educate bicyclists on safe riding, rules of the road, and assisting parents on with plenty for everyone in the family. The police department is also encouraging motorists to stop by and learn more about the rules of the road specifically outlined for bikes and cars.

Lucky Brake Bicycles will be on location to assist with safety checks, helmet fittings, bike sizing, and proper air pressure checks for tires. They will also have some items from the store for purchase as well as being able to answer your bike/equipment related questions. The McHenry County Bicycle Club will also be there on May 20 to meet and greet area riders, introduce riders to new places, events and bike programs. They will be able to help discuss bike etiquette, rules of the road, road safety and more.

Other events happening at Riding Right with LITH PD will be the Bike Registration Program. This allows LITH residents the opportunity to register their bikes with the police department, which is meant to help to deter theft if the bike should ever be stolen.

The Child ID Service will also be on location and will provide a photo identification card that parents or guardians can carry in their purse or wallet, keep it in a safe place, or secure it onto the bottom of the child’s car seat. The card includes a photo of the child, address, date of birth, parent’s names, emergency contact and important medical information, according to a news release.

While our community members are at the event, they can to stop by our Nixle table and get registered for emergency updates. It allows citizens to stay up-to-date on happenings in their neighborhood through email and text messages sent by the Lake in the Hills Police Department.
