FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

On December 10, 2021, Michael A. Vrba, 37, of Crystal Lake, Illinois, entered into a negotiated plea of guilty to the offense of Attempted First-Degree Murder and was sentenced to 25 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections by the Honorable McHenry County Judge Michael Coppedge. Under Illinois Truth in Sentencing Guidelines, the defendant will be required to serve 85% of his sentence which will be followed by three years of mandatory supervised release (parole).

Michael Vrba was arrested in January of 2020 after an investigation revealed that he had entered the home of the victim in the early morning hours of January 9th, 2020, armed with a knife. Once inside, the defendant repeatedly stabbed the victim about the neck and chest. The defendant then fled the area leaving items of clothing he had worn during the attack in the victim’s front lawn. 

The case was investigated by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and was prosecuted by Assistant State’s Attorneys Mary Ann Scholl and Jim Newman.
