Police: Teen Shot After Pointing Gun At Cop

Responding to report of "suspicious activity", cops were confronted by a gun-wielding teen.

MARENGO, IL — An armed teenager was shot by a police officer Saturday night in northwest suburban Marengo, police said.

Police received a call of suspicious activity shortly after 11 p.m. in the 800 block of East Prairie Street, according to a statement from Officer Andrew Kjellgren.

When officers arrived, they “were confronted by a juvenile armed with a firearm.” Police said the juvenile pointed the gun at a Marengo officer.

The officer, a 10-year veteran of the department, drew his service weapon and shot the boy, who has been identified as a 16-year-old boy who had been wanted on juvenile warrants, police told the Northwest Herald.

The shooting is being investigated by the McHenry County sheriff’s office and the McHenry County Investigative Assistance Team.

The teen has been taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to police.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave, as is normal practice after police-involved shootings.

The last time a suspect was shot by police in Marengo, a town of 7,500, was almost exactly 11 years ago, following the Mother's Day murder of an 83-year-old woman, the Northwest Herald notes.

Jose Manuel Aldava-Grijaldo, 21, was unarmed when he was shot and killed in Hampshire by police who spotted him driving the victim's car, but an investigation determinded he was a threat to an officer the shooting was justified, according to the paper.
