Popular Algonquin Sub Shop Reopens Following Fire

Algonquin Sub Shop was closed for much of January but has since underwent repairs and reopened.

ALGONQUIN, IL – For fans of the Algonquin Sub Shop, we have some good news. All your favorite subs are once again available since the business, which was closed for several weeks following a fire, has reopened. Algonquin Sub Shop, at 105 Filip Street in Algonquin, was damaged in the Jan. 2 blaze opened its doors back up last week following repairs.

The blaze started when owner John Ryals said he was trying to thaw frozen water pipes by using a propane heating device to warm a crawl space on Jan. 2, according to the Northwest Herald. The restaurant's siding caught on fire.

The blaze may have closed the popular sandwich shop for many weeks but the setback did give Ryals the chance to complete some renovations and freshen up his self-described "hole-in-the-wall" restaurant. The dining room got new walls, menu boards, flooring, lighting, tables and chairs, the Northwest Herald reports. The fryer and grills in the kitchen were also replaced.

“We are now the cute little place that has good food instead of the hole in the wall that has good food,” Ryals told the Northwest Herald.

Community members stopped out to a fund-raiser at the Golf Club of Illinois last month to help raise funds for the repairs. One hundred percent of proceeds from pasta dinners served at the fundraiser on Jan. 18 went to Algonquin Sub Shop.

"It was really humbling to see the community come together to help us out in our time of need," according to a post on the Algonquin Sub Shop Facebook page.

The sub shop reopened on Jan. 31 and it's been business as usual since.
