Small Business Week Should Also Mean Protecting Small Businesses

During Small Business Week, we celebrate the entrepreneurs who power Illinois’ economy. They are the restaurant owners, contractors, retailers, and service providers who take risks, create jobs, and invest in their communities.

But recognition alone isn’t enough.

Small businesses across Illinois and in Algonquin are operating in an increasingly difficult legal environment, where lawsuit abuse drives up costs and creates uncertainty. While large corporations can absorb these pressures, small businesses cannot. For many, even the threat of litigation is enough to delay hiring, raise prices, or reconsider future investments.

Recent data underscores the stakes. Excessive tort costs are not just a legal issue, they are an economic one, costing Illinois jobs, reducing business output, and ultimately impacting families and communities across the state.

Illinois lawmakers have an opportunity and a responsibility to address this challenge. Sensible legal reforms that curb abusive litigation while preserving access to the courts would provide meaningful relief to the small businesses that form the backbone of our economy.

If we truly value small businesses in Algonquin, we should do more than celebrate them for one week. We should create an environment where they can grow, hire, and succeed year-round.
