This is What the Bubs Subs Hubbub is All About

Annie and family try out a new Algonquin Sub Shop.

The weather in the area has been a little off this winter.

I always hear people say, "If you do not like the weather in the Chicago area, wait a few hours because it will change."

Last week was a perfect example. It was 53 degrees one day, and the next day we received 5  inches of snow on our green-again lawns.

The weather folk keep mentioning El Niño and La Niña are to blame for the recent odd weather patterns — which reminded me that a friend suggested we try the El Niño sub at .

No need to ask us twice: As soon as we had a free moment, we decided to check it out.

, 260 S. Randall Road, Algonquin, is in a little strip of shops in the Home Depot parking lot.

We arrived at for a late lunch and as soon as we opened the door, we instantly were hit with the wonderful smell of fresh baking bread. It only got better.

My family ordered an array of subs so we could each sample the three types of sandwiches — subs, grinders and beefs. has a kids’ meal — a 4-inch sub with a bag of chips and a drink. I love a dining establishment that offers a kids’ meal.

The little kids each asked for a turkey sub (one plain and one with mayo) and picked a bag of chips. The adults ordered an El Niño (Italian beef topped with pepper jack cheese, homemade chipotle mayo, Tapatio-brand hot sauce and homemade hot giardiniera), a Fire Bird (turkey, spicy Italian capicola, pepper jack cheese and homemade giardiniera); a B.L. Turkey (turkey, bacon, and cheese), a Three Amigos (ham, roast beef, turkey and provolone cheese) and an Italian beef (without peppers and cheese).

Every single bite of our sandwiches was awesome. Better than awesome — everything tasted fresh, and the bread was fantastic. Seriously, there are not enough positive adjectives to describe the sandwiches we tried.

The El Niño is labeled as “spicy,” it should be labeled as “deliciously spicy.” The beef was probably one of the best beefs I have ever had (and I ate my fair share when I was pregnant with my first child — it was all I craved).

The Fire Bird, Three Amigos and B.L. Turkey were all excellent as well. My kids loved their turkey subs, however, my 4-year-old ate most of the beef sandwich and asked for another one to take home. When I asked my 15-year-old to rate her B.L. Turkey on a scale of 1 to 10, she said she could not do it because it was “off the charts good.”

We definitely will be visiting again soon … I’m just wondering, how soon is too soon?
