Algonquin Yo-Yo Artist Makes Top Five in Talent Competition

Algonquin yo-yo artist Shane Lubecker, 16, has made it to the final five in the Suburban Chicago’s Got Talent Competition.

Initially, the competition began with 200 acts. Through extensive judging, that group was cut down to 20 acts, then to 10. Fan-voting sliced that group in half, revealing the final five.

“I was pretty excited,” Lubecker said. “I thought it was cool that they liked my performance, and thought it was good enough to make it on to the next round.”

The final five will perform at the Metropolis at 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5, followed by a performance at the Taste of Arlington Heights on Saturday, Aug. 11. From there, the winner will be revealed.

To prepare for his upcoming performances, Lubecker said he would practice a lot. He also plans on incorporating new tricks and music.

The key to winning the competition is, “coming up with the best stuff that the audience will like,” he said.

While Lubecker is ecstatic, his brother—did not make it through to the top 10.

“He was bummed out,” Shane Lubecker said. “We all thought he did good. He is happy for me and is supportive for me.”
