1 Dead After Metra Train Hits Car Near Arlington Heights

The Thursday afternoon incident involving an 86-year-old Arlington Heights man led to extensive Metra delays.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — An 86-year-old Arlington Heights man was killed Thursday afternoon following a crash involving a Metra train and an automobile he was driving near Arlington Heights. The incident happened at around 2:10 p.m. when the vehicle was struck by an eastbound Metra commuter train at the intersection of Northwest Highway and Euclid Avenue, according to Arlington Heights police. The train stopped and blocked the Ridge Street crossing.

Leonard Jennings Hauskey was pronounced dead at 2:24 p.m. according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Inbound and outbound trains were eventually cleared to proceed through the area of Arlington Heights at restricted speed and were operating with extensive delays. Northwest Highway was closed between Euclid and Chestnut avenues for an investigation.

First responders from the Arlington Heights police and fire departments, along with the Rolling Meadows Fire Department, were dispatched to the scene.
