87-Year-Old Man Accused of Pepper Spraying 2 Cops at His Front Door: Police

The officers were conducting a well-being check Friday on the Arlington Heights man, who claims to be a retired Chicago cop.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — Police are accusing an 87-year-old man of spraying two officers in the face with pepper spray in an altercation during a well-being check Friday, the Arlington Heights Post reports.

The unidentified man was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated battery of a police officer in connection with the spraying, the report stated.

Police conducted a well-being check at the man's house in the 2300 block of South Goebbert Road at around 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, after receiving a call from someone claiming to be the man's lawyer, the Post reports. When officers knocked on the man's door, they allegedly received a face full of pepper spray, the report added.

Back-up units were called, and they took the man into custody, the report stated. The officers who were sprayed were taken to the hospital, treated and released, the report added.

Police are asking for the man, who claims to be a retired Chicago police officer, to have a mental health evaluation, according to the report.
