Arlington Heights Man Fires Gun At Repossessors: Mt Prospect PD

The 71-year-old believed the pair repossessing the semi-trailer were trying to steal it.

MOUNT PROSPECT, IL — An Arlington Heights man has been charged with felony attempted first-degree murder after police said he mistook two people repossessing a semi-trailer for thieves. Michael Hrycyk, 71, of the 1000 block of East Waverly Drive, was arrested Jan. 12 following the incident in a parking lot located in the 2200 block of South Busse Road, Mount Prospect.

Hrycky was released following his arrest and placed on electronic monitoring. He is due back in court on Feb. 14. The Cook County State's Attorney's Office approved the charge.

Police responded to the parking lot at around 5:35 p.m. Jan. 12 for a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, they found two workers in the process of repossessing a semi-trailer when a person, later identified as Hrycyk, reportedly fired a gun at their vehicle. Officers were able to quickly find Hrycyk, who was inside his parked truck in the same parking lot.

Police found a handgun in Hrycyk's truck. He told police he believed the semi-trailer was being stolen, so he fired one shot toward the truck, attempting to shoot the driver and stop the theft. Police found a shell casing on scene and a bullet hole in the victim's truck.
