Car Catches Fire Near Home Following Lightning Strike

[Video] The fire occurred during Tuesday's storm in Arlington Heights.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — Homeowners throughout the area continue clean-up from Tuesday's severe thunderstorms and dangerous wind conditions as a result of the remnants of Tropical Storm Cristobal hitting Chicagoland. Lightning struck a power line at around 4 p.m., and a resident's car was engulfed in flames as a result of the downed line, in the 600 block of Dryden Place, near St. Viator High School, in central Arlington Heights.

Upon arrival, the Arlington Heights Fire Department contacted ComEd due to the downed electrical wires. The vehicle fire put itself out before ComEd arrived on the scene, according to the Arlington Heights Police Department.

At the height of the storm, ComEd reported 68 power outages, affecting 4,271 customers, in the Arlington Heights area. The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm warning and advised residents to move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a building.
