Driver, 69, Dies From Rollover Crash Injuries: Arlington Heights PD

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — A 69-year-old Des Plaines man died Sunday morning at Lutheran General Hospital from injuries sustained in a two-car crash. The identity of the driver is not being released until family members have been notified, according to the Arlington Heights Police Department.

Police said the crash occurred at around 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Lake Cook Road and Bloomington Avenue, in the very northwest section of the Village. It shut down the road for several hours for crash cleanup and an investigation.

Police and fire personnel responded to the scene of the crash, which was originally reported at Lake Cook and Wilke roads. It was quickly located further west at Bloomington Avenue. Buffalo Grove first-responders provided assistance during the initial response.

According to police, an initial investigation has revealed a dark gray BMW M340i was traveling eastbound on Lake Cook Road at a rate greater than the posted speed limit. A metallic brown Jeep Grand Cherokee was pulling forward from a stop sign on Bloomington entering Lake Cook Road. Police said the BMW's front end struck the Jeep's driver's side, resulting in a T-bone type impact. Upon contact, force caused the Jeep to roll over several times, coming to rest in the westbound parkway of Lake Cook Road. There was significant intrusion into the Jeep's driver's side.

Paramedics from the Arlington Heights fire department removed the Jeep's sole occupant, the 69-year-old Des Plaines man, and immediately began advanced life support treatment. He suffered multiple traumatic injuries and was transported to a Level I Trauma Center (Lutheran General Hospital) for medical intervention of life-threatening injuries.

Police said the Des Plaines man succumbed to his injuries at 4:14 a.m. Sunday. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office is conducting the autopsy.

A Deer Park male, 18, was driving the BMW, and two teenage passengers were evaluated by paramedics and refused further care. They were picked up by family and self-transported for medical evaluation.

A third teenage passenger was taken by Palatine Fire Department paramedics to a local hospital for a non- life-threatening injury.

Lake Cook Road was temporarily closed to both east and westbound traffic, east of Route 53 to Wilke, for several hours while accident reconstruction investigators documented the scene and collected evidence.

The Arlington Heights Police Department is being assisted in this investigation by the Major Case Assistance Team – Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction (STAR) specialized investigative unit.

Police said investigators will pursue legal process to access and obtain any electronic data stored within the involved vehicles in an effort to identify relevant contributory factors. The incident remains under investigation
