Driver Flees Scene After Striking State Police Squad Car On IL 53 In NW Suburbs

NORTHWEST SUBURBS, IL — An Illinois State Police squad car was damaged on Illinois 53 near Rolling Meadows and Schaumburg early Sunday after it was struck by another vehicle. Police said the trooper had pulled over on the right shoulder of the northbound lanes at Algonquin Road with emergency lights activated at around 3:46 a.m. to assist a stranded motorist.

According to ISP, a black Dodge Ram pickup failed to slow down and struck the rear driver's side of the stationary squad car. The Dodge then struck the driver's side of the vehicle in front of the squad before continuing northbound on IL-53 for approximately 200 yards, where they stopped due to damage sustained in the crash. The driver of the Dodge then fled the scene.

The trooper and the driver of the other victim vehicle were outside their vehicles at the time of the crash. No injuries were reported, and the investigation is ongoing.

This incident marks the third Move Over Law-related crash for the Illinois State Police in 2026. In 2025, ISP reported 14 Move Over Law-related crashes, resulting in seven Troopers injured. In 2024, ISP had 12 Move Over Law-related crashes, which included one fatality.

The ISP reminds the public about the Move Over Law, also known as "Scott's Law" in Illinois. This law requires all drivers to move over when approaching an emergency vehicle or any vehicle with its emergency or hazard lights activated. A person who violates the Move Over Law faces a fine of no less than $250 and no more than $10,000 for a first offense.

If a violation of the Move Over Law results in injury to another person, the violator's driver's license will be suspended for a mandatory period of six months to two years. More information about ISP-related crashes is available on the ISP website.
