Standoff Ends, Residents Rescued After Home Invasion: Arlington Heights PD

Police said an armed man who had barricaded himself inside a home for nearly eight hours had been taken into custody.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — Police said late Thursday afternoon a standoff with an armed male who had barricaded himself inside a home earlier in the day ended as he was taken into custody. According to the Arlington Heights Police Department, the incident has been "peacefully resolved" following an incident that nearly lasted eight hours. A small police presence will still remain in the area.

Earlier in the day, officers were able to enter the single-family residence in the 800 block of N. Chestnut Avenue and rescue the homeowners.

In addition, nearby schools were notified and placed on a soft lockdown as a precaution. Residents were being asked to stay away from the area with a "large police presence" on scene.

Police responded to a burglary in progress at around 7:33 a.m. Thursday, in the area of the 800 block of N. Chestnut Avenue. Responding officers were able to "quickly determine" a suspected armed male was inside the residence with the two homeowners.

The residents secured themselves inside a bedroom and called 911, according to police. Responding officers made a "dynamic entry," rescuing the homeowners and escorting them unharmed out of the residence.

During the interaction, officers heard the discharge of a firearm from within the residence. Arlington Heights Fire Department personnel also responded to the scene.

The officers set up a perimeter and could see the suspect moving inside the residence. The suspect did not respond to officers' commands. The Northern Illinois Police Alarm System was activated for additional assistance with the armed barricaded suspect.

Police said the male surrendered at around 3 p.m. after a "prolonged negotiation and tactical deployment."
