Man, 92, Killed At I-90 Tollway Booth In Arlington Heights

The Hawthorn Woods man may have had a medical emergency prior to the accident, according to Illinois State Police.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — A 92-year-old Hawthorn Woods man died following a one-car crash Friday at the I-90 Plaza 18 tollway booth at Arlington Heights Road. Lavern Gank was driving west on the interstate at around 2:40 p.m. when he lost control of his car and struck the booth. He was transported to Lutheran General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead from minor injuries about an hour after the accident, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office.

Illinois State Police believe Gank may have suffered a medical emergency immediately preceding the crash.

At around 2:25 p.m. Friday, the right two lanes at Plaza 18 (cash toll lanes) on Interstate 90 westbound at Arlington Heights Road were closed for the investigation. The open I-Pass Toll lanes remained open for travel. All lanes reopened at 3:04 p.m.
