Man Drives Off Road At Motel After Fatal Medical Emergency: Police

Arlington Heights police said the "senior-aged" man drove off the roadway on Rand Road Monday and into the parking lot at Keyes Motel.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — A man died Monday night after possibly having a medical emergency while driving on Rand Road. Police and witnesses believe the "senior-aged" male was slumped over the steering wheel prior to the van drifting off Rand Road into the parking lot at Keyes Motel.

The driver's identity has not been released as family members are being notified. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office is conducting the autopsy.

At 4:42 p.m., police were called to the 2300 block of East Rand Road due to a single-vehicle traffic crash.

A preliminary investigation revealed that a white Chevrolet panel van was traveling eastbound on Rand Road when it left the roadway into the parking lot of the motel at 2323 E. Rand Road. Witnesses believe the driver, and sole occupant of the van, was slumped over the steering wheel prior to the van drifting off the road at a "controlled, slower speed." Police said there was little damage to the van or motel landscaping.

The initial police units arrived, found the driver unconscious, and immediately began CPR. An AED was deployed by a second arriving officer. Fire department paramedics arrived, quickly assumed patient care, and began advanced life support treatment. The driver was taken to NCH/Endeavor Emergency Department for medical intervention. Police said medical staff worked diligently to establish a viable heart rhythm. The driver was pronounced deceased by an attending physician.
