New Times for District 214 Schools; How Will Your High Schooler's Schedule be Affected?

The later start and dismissal times are part of a 2-year pilot program approved by the school board this week.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — Students' days at schools in Township High School District 214 will be starting and ending a bit later beginning the next term after thanks to a two-year pilot program unanimously approved by the school board Thursday, according to the Daily Herald.

District officials hope the later times will boost attendance and overall student performance, the report stated. Superintendent David Schuler told the Herald he thinks the new times will relieve some of the stress for students, making them healthier and more productive, the report added.

Days for District 214 usually run from about 7:30 a.m. until about 2:45 p.m. The new times for District 214 high schools starting in the 2017-18 year will be:

  • 8 a.m. to 3:19 p.m.: Wheeling
  • 8:05 a.m. to 3:10 p.m.: Rolling Meadows
  • 8:15 a.m. to 3:10 p.m.: The Academy at Forest View, Buffalo Grove, Elk Grove, John Hersey, Newcomer Center, Prospect and Vanguard

(Longer school days are required for Rolling Meadows and Wheeling high schools because of their block scheduling.)

More than a year of research, consultations and discussions went into this schedule change, the Herald reports.

The new start and dismissal times also will have other effects on the school day and week. Classes and lunch periods will be shortened to 48 and 35 minutes, respectively — they currently run 50 minutes — and Thursday late starts will be dropped, the report states.
