SCHAUMBURG, IL — With July being Disability Pride Month, officials decided it was the perfect time to break ground on a new ADA transfer facility in Schaumburg. To be located adjacent to the Northwest Transportation Center, the facility will "transform a critical hub for paratransit," according to Arlington Heights-based Pace Suburban Bus.

A ceremony was held Wednesday at the new facility, which will be located adjacent to the Northwest Transportation Center. The project, funded by Rebuild Illinois, will include new assets that will "promote accessibility, expand capacity, and enhance comfort and aesthetics for people with disabilities and other commuters," according to a news release.

The Pace Northwest Transportation Center is a major hub with over 1,000 daily boardings for Pace service, including I-90 Express buses, which utilize the Illinois Tollway I-90 Flex Lanes to bypass congestion and connect commuters to the CTA Blue Line at Rosemont.

To build the facility, the former Schaumburg Post Office was demolished and an existing building was renovated to include an indoor waiting area and public restrooms. Officials said feedback from Pace's advisory committees helped create the concept for the facility.

The new transit center will include two new dual-port car charging stations, with capacity for four electric cars, an expanded drop-off area, and new Pace branded signs with real-time bus departure information, according to the news release. In addition, new sidewalks will provide pedestrian access from Mall Drive and Kimberly Drive to the bus terminal, and parking capacity will increase from 192 spaces (six ADA) to 301 spaces (eight ADA) to support the popular I-90 Express services, Improvements will also be made to landscaping and site furnishings, seating, Ventra ticketing, and digital and audio bus arrival information.
