Pair Charged With Attempted Murder In BBQ Shooting: Mt. Prospect PD
The shooting occurred in early September during a barbecue near the RecPlex recreation center.
MOUNT PROSPECT, IL — Two men have been charged with attempted murder stemming from a shooting during a barbecue in early September. Harley J. Babcock, 21, of the 500 block of Kincaid Court, Des Plaines, and Kyle Surz, 20, of the 30 block of Lynch Street, Elgin, were both arrested last week following a two-month investigation.
Both men are currently in the Cook County Jail and due back in court on Wednesday.


At 10:16 p.m. Sept. 1, police responded to the BP gas station, 800 South Elmhurst Road, Des Plaines, for a report of someone being shot. An investigation has revealed the victim was attending a barbecue near the RecPlex, 420 West Dempster St., Mount Prospect, when Babcock and Surz, who were known to the victim, approached him.

The two reportedly began to argue with the victim. Police said Babcock then produced a handgun and started shooting at the victim. The victim was shot and fled toward the BP Gas Station. Both Babcock and Surz fled the area in an older model Chevrolet conversion van in an unknown direction.

While crime scene technicians processed the scene, with assistance from the Rolling Meadows Police Department K9 unit, multiple shell casings were located. It was later discovered that Surz had also cut the victim with a knife during the argument.
The victim was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, where he was treated for his wounds, which were not life-threatening. No other people reported being injured.
Mount Prospect police detectives were able to identify and locate Babcock and Surz, and took them into custody. The Cook County State's Attorney's Office approved the charges.
