Person Killed In Palatine Condo Fire

A total of 39 firefighters battled the deadly blaze.

PALATINE, IL — A person was killed during a condominium fire over the weekend in Palatine, according to authorities.

Firefighters responded shortly after 6:30 a.m. Saturday to an alarm in the 200 block of North Smith Street, officials said. When they arrived, they found smoke and flames coming from a second-story window, according to a news release from the Palatine Fire Department.

The blaze was contained to a single condo and one person died despite an attempted rescue, authorities said, noting the fire was brought under control in about 30 minutes. No one else was injured, according to officials.

“The Palatine Fire Department reminds everyone to have working smoke detectors in their homes, whether a single-family dwelling, an apartment, or a condo,” the news release said. “This fire was detected by a working smoke detector which provided early warning for the building’s residents.”

A total of 39 firefighters battled the blaze, including members of the Rolling Meadows and Arlington Heights fire departments. The cause is under investigation.
