Police Investigate Alleged Rat Poison Threat In Arlington Heights
A resident had placed a sign claiming there were chicken bones and rat poison scattered in the area, and warned dog walkers to be aware.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — The Arlington Heights Police Department is downplaying several reports and phone calls it has received this week regarding a sign alleging rat poison and chicken bones had been dispersed in the area of Eastman Street and Somerset Lane. The sign, placed by a resident, also advised dog owners to be aware of the potential danger.
"Understandably, such signs and information can instill a sense of fear and/or anger for any dog owners taking their pets for a walk," police said Friday. "Based on the concerning nature of the reports, [police] took immediate action and initiated an investigation."
According to police, two public service officers certified and trained in animal welfare on the force were assigned a follow-up investigation. An initial investigation did not reveal any evidence suggesting the presence of poison or chicken bones, which may have indicated deliberate luring of animals or wildlife.

Police said the immediate and surrounding areas were "extensively" searched. Officers noted the proximity of the reported area to a garage dumpster of an adjoining apartment complex, suggesting a likely source and potential for food waste to be scattered in the area by wildlife. Police also found active wildlife in the area, and noted their behavior to appear normal and appearance healthy. No sick or deceased wildlife was located in the area.
Police said it has not received any reports of sick or deceased domestic animals from owners or veterinary clinics.
