'Suspicious Behavior' Leads To Weapons Arrest: Palatine PD

A Chicago man, who had multiple warrants, was charged with two felonies following the incident over the weekend in Palatine.

PALATINE, IL — A Chicago man has been charged with two felonies after exhibiting "suspicious behavior" and being found with a loaded gun. According to Palatine police, Kenneth J. Smith, 29, of the 5100 block of W. Huron Street, is accused of felony unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon and unlawful aggravated possession of a weapon.

In addition, Smith had two active warrants — one out of DuPage County and another from the Illinois Department of Corrections for a parole violation. Smith was taken into custody on the warrants.

Smith is being held in the Cook County Jail and is due in court Tuesday.

At around 4 p.m. Saturday, police said they were conducting patrol in the 700 block of E. Rand Grove Lane when they saw Smith, who was on foot, conceal a black object behind an electrical box adjacent to an apartment building. Upon making contact with him, officers confirmed the two warrants

Police recovered the item Smith had concealed, which was a black jacket. Inside the jacket, they located a black 9mm handgun with a loaded extended magazine. Smith did not possess a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification Card.
