Water, Water Everywhere: Storm, Water Main Breaks Create a Wet Wednesday in Arlington Heights

Crews dealt with 2 water main breaks in the afternoon before heavy rains flooded streets at night.

Arlington Heights, IL—The one-two punch of flash flooding from heavy rains and twin water main breaks washed out Wednesday for many Arlington Heights residents.

In the afternoon, a water main along Arlington Heights Road, north of Northwest Highway, broke and caused traffic delays, according to an update on the city's Facebook page. The main was repaired by Wednesday night, but work crews then had to deal with a second break at Arlington Heights Road and Wing Street.

But before anyone could dry off, the thunderstorms rolled in. The heavy rainfall over a short period of time caused flash flooding along Campbell Street, as well as the intersections of Northwest Highway and Chestnut Street; Thomas Street and Kennicott Road; and Tonne and Algonquin roads, according to the Arlington Heights Post.

The flooding forced water into Mago Grill and Cantina and the Metropolis Performing Arts Centre, both on Campbell Street, the report stated. Some drivers also abandoned their vehicles when they became disabled on roadways, the report added.

City officials made sure to clarify that the water main breaks had nothing to do with the evening flooding, which stemmed from the storm.
