AURORA, IL — A Milwaukee man who, without provocation, opened fire at an Aurora New Year's Eve party in 2021 was sentenced to 18 years in prison, officials said.

Cameron J. Sebastion, of the 1200 block of South 15th Place, agreed to the prison term in the Illinois Department of Corrections in exchange for a guilty plea to attempted first-degree murder.

The shooting took place just after midnight Jan. 1 at a residence in the 800 block of Huntington Drive in Aurora. Sebastion, who officials said was high on marijuana, fired multiple shots from a handgun in the direction of several people, hitting one of them in the right arm.

"This case is an example of the risk that occurs when people combine guns, drugs and alcohol," Assistant State's Attorney Mark Stajdohar said in a statement. "Mr. Sebastion should consider himself fortunate that he didn’t kill someone."

Sebastion is required by law to serve at least 85 percent of his sentence after he was credited for the 490 days spent in the Kane County jail, officials said.
