AURORA, IL — Three siblings were found guilty in connection to the 2021 attack on an Aurora police officer, the Kane County State's Attorney's Office said Monday.

Paul Sherrod Taylor, Jennifer Taylor and Sheba Taylor remain out on bail until sentencing, which is scheduled for March 25 for the man and April 19 for the sisters. The siblings each face a sentence between three and seven years of imprisonment at the Illinois Department of Corrections, with parole eligibility.

"This matter started out as a simple traffic violation and it ended in the three people being charged with serious felonies," State's Attorney Jamie Mosser said in a statement.

The June 21 traffic violation began with Officer Joaquin Miranda pulling over a Toyota Camry, driven by Paul, for disobeying a stop sign.

After Paul pulled the car into a private driveway, the officer approached it when, within seconds, now-29-year-old Sheba exited the car and refused to get back in despite Miranda's order. Paul, now 32, was next to exit and "aggressively approached and threatened" the officer, also refusing to re-enter, according to a news release.

Miranda attempted to handcuff Paul when the man shoved the officer and fled. A foot pursuit ensued during which the man "aggressively faced off with the officer by putting up his fists and commencing a fighting stance while yelling at the officer to 'keep running, boy,'" officials said.

Prosecutors said the policeman decided not to engage with Paul until backup officers arrived. As he turned to walk toward his squad car, the sisters attacked him and actively resisted arrest while repeatedly hitting Miranda.

As the sisters attacked the officer, Paul called 911 and threatened the dispatcher he'd "'kill' the officer unless police arrived immediately," prosecutors revealed. Officials said the dispatcher could hear him screaming, "I'm going to kill you, b----" to Miranda.

The officers who responded as reinforcement had to forcibly remove the sisters from Miranda's body — Sheba sat on the officer's chest and neck while simultaneously being held down by Jennifer, now 26, officials said.

Paul, of the 600 block of Elmwood Drive in Aurora, was found guilty of the following charges:

  • Aggravated battery to a police officer, a felony
  • Threatening a public official, a felony
  • Aggravated assault of a police officer, a felony
  • Resisting a peace officer, a misdemeanor

Sheba, of the 7000 block of South Paulina Street in Chicago, was convicted of:

  • Two counts of aggravated battery to a police officer, a felony
  • Aggravated battery on a public way causing bodily harm, a felony
  • Resisting a peace officer causing injury, a felony

Jennifer, of the 7000 block of South Paulina Street in Chicago, was found guilty of:

  • Two counts of aggravated battery to a police officer, a felony
  • Two counts of aggravated battery on a public way, a felony
  • Aggravated assault of a police officer, a felony

"These defendants are now all convicted felons because they would not comply with the lawful orders of Officer Miranda," Mosser said. "They engaged in dangerous behavior that risked the life of an officer who was just doing his job. Hopefully this will teach the defendants to comply with the law or face the consequences of the legal system."
