AURORA, IL — Mark Rivera, a former lay pastor at the Anglican Church of North America, will spend an extra 6 years in prison consecutive to his previous 15-year sentence, officials announced.

The new sentence comes after the man, 50, pled guilty to criminal sexual assault stemming from a Feb. 16, 2018, incident.

That night, the victim and others were at the man's house on Granart Road in unincorporated Big Rock Township. When the victim — she and Rivera knew each other — became intoxicated, he walked her home, officials said.

Rivera then returned home when he realized she left her phone at his house. He went back to the victim's house and took advantage of her when she was unable to consent after drinking, according to prosecutors.

He is required by law to serve 85 percent of the six-year sentence consecutive to his 15-year term.

He received his first sentence in March, about three months after a jury found him guilty of two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and three counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, Patch reported.

The crime took place between June 2018 and May 2019 while he served at the church, located in Big Rock. The victim, who he knew, was younger than 13 years old.

"Mr. Rivera is a sexual predator who seeks out the vulnerable," Assistant State's Attorney Matthew Rogers said in a statement. "He belongs in prison. I wish to express my gratitude to his victims for speaking up and preventing him from preying on anyone else. Thanks to the Kane County Sheriff’s Office staff for their work in this investigation."
