Aurora Coronavirus Cases Double In 1 Week To Pass 750; 11 Deaths

AURORA, IL — The number of Aurora residents who tested positive for the new coronavirus has doubled over the past week, with the city reporting 757 cases and 11 deaths, as of Wednesday. City officials reported 370 total cases April 22.

April 22 was the first day the city reported more than 35 new cases, but officials have confirmed at least that many every day since. Data from the city’s website shows 70 cases were reported Tuesday, the most in a single day in the city since the outbreak of the coronavirus in mid-March.

The number of confirmed cases continues to rise as testing capacity expands, with at least four testing sites now operating within Aurora.

The state of Illinois launched a drive-thru coronavirus testing site last week at the Chicago Premium Outlets in Aurora, which can collect up to 600 samples daily, and VNA Health Care is offering free testing by appointment at its location on Highland Ave.

Residents can also access tests at the AMITA Health Mercy Medical Center, 1325 N. Highland Ave., and Physicians Immediate Care, 2853 Kirk Road, according to the Illinois Department of Health.

People who test positive for the coronavirus are categorized by their residence, so the city’s total case count does not include everyone who tested positive at an Aurora testing site, city officials have said.

The breakdown shows the city’s 60505 ZIP code has been hit the hardest by the coronavirus outbreak, particularly over the past week as the number of confirmed cases doubled to 363, as of Wednesday.

Kane County Coroner Confirms 15 Coronavirus Deaths In 1 Week

Aurora accounts for nearly 45 percent of all cases in Kane County. As of Wednesday, Eleven Aurora residents — nine men, between the ages of 53 and 97, and two women, ages 86 and 92 — have died since March 23, when the city recorded its first death from the coronavirus, according to Kane County Coroner Rob Russell.
