Aurora Man, 23, Charged After Firing Shots Into Ground Outside Residence: Police

The man did not shoot any people or property, Aurora police said.

AURORA, IL — A 23-year-old Aurora man who Aurora police say fired a gun into the ground April 1 was charged with reckless discharge of a firearm.

At about 8:27 p.m. that evening, police responded to a ShotSpotter alert that indicated multiple rounds were fired near the 400 block of Jackson Street. Officers soon learned that a man fired shots into the ground before entering a residence, according to a news release.

Police made contact with Jovanny Rodriguez and located firearms and evidence consistent with the reported gunfire, officials said. Rodriguez, who lives on Jackson Street, was taken into custody and charged with one felony count of reckless discharge.

"This is exactly why this type of specialized technology matters — it helps officers respond quickly, locate evidence, and take action," Chief Matt Thomas said in a statement. "While no people or property were struck by gunfire in this case, that does not make this behavior harmless. Every round fired creates risk, and we will continue to hold those accountable who put our community in danger."

As police continue investigating the incident, officers asked the community to contact the department at 630-256-5500 with any information.
