AURORA, IL — An Aurora man is facing a minimum prison sentence of 6 years after prosecutors found he sexually abused a child he knew, officials at the Kane County State's Attorney's Office announced.

Samir A. Murshed sexually assaulted the child, who was younger than 12 at the time, between June 2016 and September 2017, 49-year-old, a judge found.

Murshed, of the 400 block of Grove Street in Aurora, was convicted of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and aggravated criminal sexual abuse, both felonies. The man waived his right to a jury trial, officials said.

"I am proud of this victim for the way she came to court and faced her abuser, who was someone she believed she could trust," Assistant State's Attorney Tyler Cox said in a statement. "This verdict came more than five years after she disclosed her abuse, and I am grateful for her patience and perseverance. I cannot praise this victim’s mother enough for her quick response. Upon hearing the child’s story, she contacted the police. Most importantly, she believed her daughter."

Murshed's next court date for motions and sentencing is set for July 12. He had been free on $10,000 bail, but Judge John Barsanti revoked his bond upon conviction and ordered he be taken into custody at the Kane County jail.
