AURORA, IL — An Aurora man was found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman at a party in 2020, prosecutors said.

Rene Cano-Rodriguez, who waived his right to a jury trial, faces 4 to 15 years of imprisonment at the Illinois Department of Corrections for his conviction of criminal sexual assault, a felony.

The 32-year-old was convicted more than three years after attending a party on Aug. 22, 2020, in Aurora. While there, he gave the victim multiple shots of tequila, aware she was "highly intoxicated," before leading her to her bedroom where he sexually assaulted her, prosecutors found. The woman was not able to give consent because of her level of intoxication.

“This defendant took advantage of a situation in which the victim was unable to make her own choices," Assistant State's Attorney Matthew Rogers said in a statement. "I'm grateful to this victim/survivor for trusting us and for the courage she showed in confronting the man who assaulted her and telling her story in court."

Judge David Kliment set Cano-Rodriguez's next court date for Dec. 1 for motions and sentencing. The judge also ordered the man be taken into custody at the Kane County jail.
