Aurora Man Had Large ‘Shank’ In Kane Co. Jail: Prosecutors
He is awaiting trial on more than a dozen charges, including attempted murder, in connection with an April 2017 stabbing in Aurora.

KANE COUNTY, IL — An Aurora man awaiting trial on more than a dozen felonies related to an April 2017 stabbing was recently charged after having a "shank" inside the Kane County jail, according to prosecutors.
Michael Villagran, 36, faces a felony charge of possessing a weapon in a penal institution and a misdemeanor charge of unlawful use of a weapon, according to a news release from Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon. Prosecutors allege Villagran on July 1 had a sharpened metal weapon that was 6 to 7 inches long.

Villagran also faces 15 felony charges, including first-degree attempted murder, in connection with an April 2017 stabbing in Aurora, according to Kane County court records. A man related to Villagran’s girlfriend at that time suffered stab wounds to his torso and arms after fighting with Villagran at his home in the 600 block of South Broadway, police said in 2017, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Villagran was also charged in July 2018 with aggravated battery to a police officer after allegedly spitting at an officer, the Daily Herald reports. He was later charged twice — in August 2019 and Apirl 2020 — with damaging his cell at the Kane County jail, the report states.
Prosecutors charged Villagran in April with seven counts of threatening a public official after authorities said he sent letters to McMahon, an assistant state’s attorney, a public defender, a sergeant at the Kane County Sheriff’s Office and two county judges, the Daily Herald reports.
