Aurora Man Used Flagpole In Capitol Breach Assault: DOJ

AURORA, IL — A 24-year-old Aurora man is accused of assaulting law enforcement officers with a flagpole while illegally on Capitol grounds during the Jan. 6 riot, the U.S. Department of Justice announced Tuesday.

James Robert "Jim Bob" Elliott was arrested in Batavia on Monday and indicted on six charges, including five felonies. Scheduled to make an appearance in the Northern District of Illinois courthouse Tuesday, Elliott was charged with the following:

• Civil disorder.
• Assaulting, resisting or impeding officers using a deadly or dangerous weapon.
• Entering and remaining in a restricted building with a deadly or dangerous weapon.
• Disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building with a deadly or dangerous weapon.
• Engaging in physical violence in a restricted building with a deadly or dangerous weapon.
• Act of physical violence in the Capitol grounds or buildings.

Elliott is a member of the Proud Boys, a far-right organization of men, according to reports from the Sun-Times.

The Aurora resident is the latest person from Illinois facing federal charges in connection to the attempted insurrection.

In the ongoing investigation almost a year since the riots occurred, more than 700 people from across the country have been arrested in connection with the Capitol breach, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. Of those, more than 220 were charged with assaulting or impeding law enforcement.

Earlier this year, two Illinois residents, a 53-year-old woman from Naperville and a 66-year-old man from Posen, were linked to the Capitol insurrection and charged with disorderly and disruptive conduct, among other things, after the FBI was alerted of social media posts, authorities said. A couple from Crest Hill were also arrested and charged with several misdemeanors in July after the FBI received an anonymous tip of their involvement.

Elliott's case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia and the Department of Justice National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section. U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois has also assisted the investigation.
