AURORA, IL — An Aurora man has been sentenced to 16 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to firing a gun at police officers in 2017. Jorge L. Guzman, 24, of the 800 block of Superior Street, pleaded guilty on Dec. 27 to two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm at a peace officer in connection with the May 24, 2017, incident.

Authorities say undercover police were in an unmarked van investigating a street gang that was tied to a string of burglaries and gun thefts when Guzman drove past them on East Grove Street and stopped. Guzman then got out of his car and ran toward the police van.

Police say they rolled down the window and shouted, "Stop! Police!" several times before Guzman pulled a gun from his waist and pointed it at the van. A police officer then fired at Guzman, who ducked behind a tree and fired at least three shots toward the van.

In a statement, Kane County State's Attorney Joe McMahon said, "This is another example of how gangs and guns create a violent atmosphere that endangers police officers and citizens. Mr. Guzman should consider himself fortunate that no one was killed."

Guzman must serve 85 percent of his sentence before he becomes eligible for parole.
