Aurora Man Without License for 20 Years Gets Prison for DUI Crash that Injured 3 Kids

An Aurora man who hasn’t had a driver’s license since 1994 and has a history of unlicensed driving violations has been sent to prison for a DUI crash in which three children were injured.

Roy R. Lightfoot, 41, of the 500 block of Hammond Avenue in Aurora, was sentenced Thursday, to eight years in prison, according to a press release from the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office.

On Jan. 8, 2016, Lightfoot pleaded guilty to aggravated DUI causing great bodily harm, a class 4 felony, and driving while license revoked, a class 4 felony.

Prosecutors presented evidence that at about 8:20 p.m. March 10, 2014, Lightfoot was driving his red 1990 Cadillac Fleetwood east on Illinois Avenue in Aurora when his car jumped the raised center median just east of Lake Street and collided head-on with a gray 2009 Chevrolet Aveo that was westbound on Illinois Avenue, according to the release.

All four occupants of the Aveo – the driver and three children – were taken to a local hospital for treatment. The Aveo driver sustained a minor spinal fracture and a concussion, the release said. A child passenger seated in the back needed more than 20 staples to close a head wound. The other two children had minor injuries. All three children were younger than 12 years old. The four victims have recovered from their injuries.

Lightfoot’s blood-alcohol concentration shortly after the crash was .294, approximately 3½ times Illinois’ limit of .08.

Lightfoot was convicted on a 1994 DUI charge and his license was revoked. He has since been cited nine times, including the 2014 incident, for unlicensed driving.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge Hallock admonished Lightfoot for flaunting the law by driving without a license, specifically because Lightfoot has a vanity plate that reads, “ROYSCAD,” according to the release.

According to Illinois law, Ramirez must serve at least 85 percent of the sentence. He was given credit for at least 471 days served in the Kane County jail.
