Aurora Police Warn Not To Leave Running Cars Unattended

Criminals often steal cars while they are being warmed up and then use them to commit other crimes.

AURORA, IL — The first chill of the fall season has hit and with it comes an increase with thieves stealing running cars. Aurora Police are being proactive in warning residents not to leave a running car unattended and unlocked while it's warming up.

Police say that close to 30 cars were stolen last year between October and April in Aurora while the vehicles were being warmed up by their owners. Even if you lock your car, you shouldn't leave it unattended while running, police say, because car thieves will not hesitate to shatter a window to gain access.

These cars are often used later by suspects to commit other crimes, according to police. They also mention that many insurance companies will not cover costs if a car is damaged or stolen while running.
