Aurora Pride Festival May Become Aurora Pride Weekend

The weekend-long Pride fest would include a 5K, a poetry slam, a film fest, and more.

AURORA, IL — Aurora's very first pride parade was a milestone for the city and its surrounding suburbs, but Aurora isn't ready to stop there. With the momentum of the popular parade behind them, Indivisible Aurora reached out to city in the hopes of creating a weekend-long Aurora Pride Festival in 2019, according to a press release from the city.

The proposed festivities would include a kickoff party on Friday, June 7, a 5K race on June 8, and a poetry slam, market, and film fest on June 9.

Chuck Adams, who runs Indivisible Aurora, said, "[O]ur team is already looking forward to a more expansive event for 2019.”

So far, it looks like an Aurora Pride weekend could be a reality in 2019.

Mayor Richard Irvin spoke about the impact of the first pride parade in the city's news release, saying, "along the parade route, I spoke with people – some with tears in their eyes – who repeatedly thanked us for being the host city."

On the prospect of expanding the celebration, Irvin said, "I'm all for it."
