Woman, 95, Dies After Driving Into Retention Pond: Police

Police say the 95-year-old woman lost control of her car and drove it into a retention pond.

AURORA, IL — A 95-year-old Downers Grove woman has died after a she lost control of her car and drove it into a retention pond in Aurora Friday. Helen A. Duncan, of the 4900 block of Douglas Road, was pulled from the water after the accident, but succumbed to her injuries early Saturday. Police say the car became submerged under eight feet of water about 100 feet from the shore at around 1:35 p.m. Friday.

According to police, Duncan was heading southbound on DuPage Parkway when she lost control of her car and drove into the retention pond.

Bystanders helped Aurora firefighters rescue Duncan, according to police spokesperson Dan Ferrelli. She was initially rushed to a nearby hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries. Authorities planned to transfer her to another hospital but she could not be moved due to her unstable medical condition, police said.

Duncan was pronounced dead just after 1:30 a.m. Saturday at Presence Mercy Medical Center in Aurora, police said.
