Coronavirus Cases In Kane County Approach 6K

The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Kane County jumped more than 25 percent over the past week, according to state data.

KANE COUNTY, IL — More than 1,200 people in Kane County have tested positive for the coronavirus in the past week, a nearly 27 percent increase in the total number of cases in the county since May 18, according to public health data. Statistics from the Illinois Department of Public Health show 5,846 Kane County residents have tested positive, as of Monday.

The county saw its second-largest spike in the total number of cases since on May 21, when 334 new cases were confirmed, the data shows. More than 400 new cases were confirmed May 11. County officials have confirmed at least 100 new cases every day since April 29. There were only three days with more than 100 new cases between March 10 — the day the county recorded its first case — and April 28, the data shows.

Of the 1,233 new cases in the past week, 571 were Aurora residents and 302 were from Elgin, according to the state’s data. Aurora accounts for more than 45 percent of all confirmed cases in Kane County — with 2,658 — while Elgin residents represent almost a quarter of the county’s cases. More than 46 percent of all cases were confirmed in people 40 and under, the data shows.

A look at the 7-day rolling average of confirmed cases in the county shows the number of daily new cases continues to rise, though the measure has dropped off from its peak after the May 21 spike in cases. A rolling average takes into account daily fluctuations to show longer-term trends.

Confirmed cases continue to rise due in part to expanding accessibility of testing. There are more than a dozen locations in Kane County conducting coronavirus testing after CVS and Walmart launched drive-thru sites last week.

Residents at long-term-care facilities account for about 12 percent of all coronavirus cases and 63 percent of all coronavirus-related deaths in Kane County, according to IDPH statistics, which show 693 cases and 96 deaths linked to those facilities, as of Saturday.

An outbreak at the Bria of Geneva senior living facility led to at least 112 cases and 25 deaths, more than a quarter of all residents, state data shows.

IDPH statistics show hospitals in Illinois' Northwest Suburbs Region — which includes Kane, DeKalb and McHenry counties and parts of Kendall and Lake counties — are using about 60 percent of intensive-care-unit beds and about 29 percent of ventilators in the region, as of Sunday.

Hospitals in the Northwest Suburbs Region have 198 ICU beds and 332 ventilators available, as of Sunday, the state's data shows.
